Are Stress And Back Pain Inter-Related?

By Isaac G. Baker

Did you know that stress is among the major elements accountable for back pain in legions of people? It has been discovered that almost Sixty billion dollars are spent on the treating of back stiffness in America every year, stress being the number one cause. Here, stress refers to anything that has got a bad effect on your nerve system and musculoskeletal system. It could be almost anything from nutritional, physical, emotional to mental.

Ideally, the adrenal glands must respond when you're stressed. However if they're already over exhausted, the effect is certain to pass on to the musculoskeletal system thus leading to back stiffness. When you are stressed, the nerves supplying the adrenals get influenced, either at the point of origin or near the point of destination. Whatever may be the situation, the musculature around the nerves are bound to feel the pain, when they are affected.

Further on, stress also causes the muscles to tighten up. Infrequently, when the strain levels are very high, the muscles tighten up to great extent. This leads on to muscle spasms, which in turn leads to back pain. While all the muscles can tighten up because of stress, it is the neck and back muscles that are most attuned to stress. It is precisely because of this that sciatic agony and different kinds of back pain irritate under stressful conditions.

Stress is also responsible for affecting the blood flow in your tissues. This is another significant factor that causes back pain. Stress can adversely affect the recovery of those on the edge of getting over an injury because the healing process gets delayed. Inadequate blood flow causes many significant problems in your body. The acidic products that are released during muscled activities do not get thrown out due to this and many derivatives get build up. This leads to fatigue and more discomfort. One should always try to keep the strain levels low particularly if suffering from sciatica.

When you're under strain, your consciousness starts to perceive discomfort in a different way. You begin to feel the discomfort more. Endorphins, that are known to be the feel good hormones lead you to feel good even when you are experiencing discomfort. These very hormones work in the reverse manner when you are stressed.

But you should remember that stress management alone would not cure sciatica or any other form of back pain. However if you keep it under check, you can certainly help prevent the problem from becoming worse.
