Basic Info Regarding Spinal Stenosis

By Michael Pritsker

Back pain is an annoying, often debilitating issue that many people suffer from. Usually, poor posture or using improper lifting techniques are to blame for the pain. Other times, it is a sign of a spinal issue. One of these issues that can cause back pain is known as spinal stenosis.

This is a very common medical problem that revolves around the spinal column. This condition is defined as the narrowing of the spinal canal, which puts unnatural pressure on the spinal cord and its surrounding nerves and tissues. It might be worth the time to educate yourself about the basics of this condition.

As with most back problems, the severity and intensity of the symptoms will vary from person to person, depending on the location of the problem and the damage it is causing. Sometimes, the individual will have the issue with no signs of discomfort or pain. Often the issue is found accidentally when a patient goes in for an MRI. Common symptoms to watch for are pain and numbness. Also, this condition has been known to damage the nerves of the bladder and bowels, often leading to incontinence.

There are several issues that can decrease the space found in the spinal canal. The most common cause of this is the aging process, which can naturally degrade the spinal area. Other causes include spinal injuries and tumors, and a variety of other genetic factors and diseases.

There are a many treatment options available for a sufferer of spinal stenosis. Often, over-the-counter medicines can bring relief. If this fails to help, a doctor can prescribe more potent medications. Other valid options include physical therapy, steroid injections, and surgery.

Back pain induced by spinal stenosis will effect different people in different ways, making an official diagnosis important. By examining your particular situation, your doctor can recommend a number of treatments that can bring relief. Be aware of a family history of back pain, and consult a doctor if you begin showing signs of a spinal condition.
