Reasons Of Upper Back Aches

By Vince Starr

Back problems are one of the leading occupational hazards in the United States. Upper back pain is less common than lower back pain. The upper back is generally considered to be the thoracic cage. The thoracic cage consists of 12 spinal bones in their ribs. The spinal bones are connected with soft tissues such as ligaments, tendons and muscles. This skeletal structure is designed to protect the vital organs of the body.

This upper area generally experiences little movement. It is meant to be flexible and to provide a protective area for the major organs like the heart and the liver. Other areas such as the neck and lower back have greater range of motion than the upper spine area.

There are a number of conditions which can affect the upper spine. Although, upper spine pain is less likely then lower back pain or neck pain. However, there are situations involving the thoracic area. This can lead to pain, soreness and discomfort.

The upper spine has two main functions in the body. The first is providing the major organs with a protective barrier. The second is to transmit the body weight between the head and the lower extremities. Although it is not move as much it must be flexible to help distribute weight of your body.

What are causes of upper spine pain? There seem to be two main groups of discomfort coming from this region. One general group is joint dysfunction. The other is classified as soft tissue irritation.

Soft tissue injuries usually involve either a sprain or a strain in the back. If the muscle somehow gets stretched excessively, this is termed as a muscle strain. In the case of a sprain, ligaments which hold the spinal bones together can be injured. These are the two most frequently cited causes of upper spine pain.

The two most common conditions which accounts for the most common causes of back pain are strains and sprains. These are soft tissue injuries. The soft tissues must have sufficient strength yet have enough flexibility to perform their functions.

One common cause that many people do not realize is the strain put on the back from sitting. Many people work long hours in a seated position at a desk. The muscles of the back can become fatigued because of the attention being put on them.

There are a number of more serious conditions which can result in more chronic upper spine pain. One common cause of back pain is a ruptured or herniated disc. The discs act as shock absorbers during movement to provide a cushion. Over time they may wear and lose their flexibility. Other conditions are arthritis, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis.

The treatment for upper spine pain can vary substantially. For more chronic conditions, it may involve surgery. Lesser conditions may be relieved with proper stretching, exercise and massage therapy. The key is to keep the strength of muscles and to retain their flexibility. Many people seek chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors help to adjust the spine to better align it as well as provide supplemental therapies such as massage therapy.

There are a number of treatments for upper back pain. Normally, your physician or chiropractor will perform a number of tests to determine what the situation with you is. However, the tests are not always 100% accurate in detecting the root cause. This area the body is very complex and sometimes difficult to diagnose.

The good thing is that there are more treatment options available today than ever before. Doctors also reserve surgery as a last resort. There are many natural methods to help restore the health of your spine. Discuss with your health professional natural options which can help to reduce and relieve your upper back pain.
