A lot of back pain is caused by sitting at a poorly set up computer. Position your computer so that the screen is at eye level and so that the keyboard can be reached without unwarranted strain on your back.

Often, these types of back issues are the result of a degenerative disease or other situation that is difficult to prevent.

When going for a long drive, take the time to stop regularly and take a break from sitting. While you're out of the car you should also exercise a little and allow your back to have a rest. If you need to reach your destination at a certain time, calculate stops in so you're not late.
